Printech Secure Payment System is the Authorized User of Padlock Icon

Check fraud is one of growing problem in the US financial system. As technology evolves, Padlock Secure payment systemperpetrators are always coming up with innovative ideas to ‘manufacture’ checks. It costs US banks and consumers billions of dollars annually. The members of the check printing and payment industry recognized the need to improve the security to deter any kind of fraud related to check products. Check Payment Systems Association developed the padlock icon. The padlock can be printed on secure documents adding extra security to checks, statements and other documents.

The padlock icon on the checks indicates that extra security measures have been taken in designing and production of the checks or the material being used adheres to the industry standard. These steps make harder for perpetrators involved in fraudulent activity to reproduce or change checks. On the other hand it helps those parties accepting checks to verify its authenticity and adherence to security regulations. However other preventive measures also need to be in place to make this whole process working smoothly.

PAdlock Secure payment systemCheck Payment Systems Association requires presence of minimum three features in order to use Padlock Icon with secure payment system. The Padlock Icon itself printed on the front of the check and its corresponding descriptive verbiage along with the padlock icon and warning box printed on the back of the document represents one feature. Thus, two additional features must be present and designated to satisfy the minimum requirement.

Additional features may include micro data printed on the check and containing dynamic information regarding payee, check amount, date and other information. It is not visible to the human eye and can only be read with the use of the magnifying glass. The micro line can be printed above signature line, or on the boarder of the check. If printed in the back of the check it can appear in the endorsement area.

Another security feature may be printing of design in the back of the document. This feature screen is very light and cannot be copied or seen when scanning the document that disables scanning or reprinting checks. This feature can be printed with low percentage screen. Other security features can be incorporated into graphics, text and layout that appear on check. The use of special check paper with secure payment system can be also an element acceptable as security feature.

ASC X9/TG-8 2002, Check Security Guideline, and ANSI X9.100-170-2010, Check Fraud Deterrent Icon. The documents have specific information about positioning of the symbol, its size and processing with secure payment system.

Companies need to get authorization for the use of padlock in their documents. They have to submit application indicating the reason for using it as well as samples of checks or other secure documents, so that Check Payment Systems Association can inspect and accept the checks or may recommend adding extra security features. This process usually takes 10-15 business days. Authorized companies can incorporate padlock in their secure documents using secure payment system.
